Last summer during my journalism internship with Local iQ, I was called upon to write an article about an exhibit opening in town. The show was called Adaptations and was a collage of work from people who have closely dealt with cancer in some way. (You can find the article, Adept At Adaptations, on my portfolio page.)
The story fascinated me, and I had been looking for a project to do a documentary on as that is a medium I'd never tried. I spent a few days filming with a borrowed tripod, Canon 5D MkII, and Rode mic. Simply the opportunity to talk to these deep souls was enough to make it worth my time. While this documentary is certainly not the best as I ran into some trouble with sound and construction, loss of power on location, etc., I'm happy with the final outcome. All the mistakes in this piece are lessons I've learned to improve with the next project I do.
I hope you find these artists' stories inspiring. I certainly will carry them with me in the years to come.
